NCE Candid Conversation on Teacher Leadership & Coaching During Remote Learning
Moderators NCE Associate Professor Geri Chesner and Assistant Professor Renee Gugel are joined by experienced classroom and school leaders, who share their perspectives on the unique challenges and opportunities related to coaching during the pandemic and the overall transition to remote learning. During the course of the webinar, the panelists:
- Reflect on the successes and lessons learned around coaching while shifting to remote learning and how they are preparing for this fall
- Share tips and ideas for coaches on how to connect with and support the individual needs of teachers as well as reflect on their own needs as educators
- Discuss what is staying the same in coaching and what is shifting
Panelists
- Fatima Cooke serves as the principal of Sumner Math & Science Community Academy, in Chicago’s North Lawndale Community. She is an experienced educational leader and team player with a proven track record of collaborating with school communities and increasing student achievement. Fatima earned her B.S. from Northern Illinois University, M.S. from Chicago State University, Ed.S. from National Louis University, and is currently working to complete her Ed.D from National Louis University. A Chicago Public Schools alumna herself, Fatima is a life-long learner who is committed to ensuring that all students have the educational foundation they need to become caring, successful and productive citizens.
- Dr. Nichole Farris, Instructional Specialist at Juarez Middle School in D60, has 20+ years of teaching and school leadership experience. Throughout her career she has served as an 8th grade Social Studies teacher, assistant principal, instructional coach. In her current role, Nichole’s primary focus is on enhancing instructional delivery for the school’s 6th through 8th grade ELA and Math teams.
- Dora M. Guzmán is a Bilingual Reading Specialist for grades K-5 in Bensenville School District 2 where she provides interventions in Spanish and English literacy. Her other professional roles include mentoring new bilingual teachers, co-leading her school's literacy night and committees, leading the MTSS process, co-writing literacy curriculum for bilingual grade levels, supporting professional learning to her local staff, and teaching as an adjunct for NLU's undergraduate and graduate literacy courses. A current doctoral student in the EDD Reading, Language, & Literacy program at NLU, when Dora is not teaching or reading research, she is reading and reviewing children's books.
- Kelli Hamilton, Instructional Coach for DeKalb CUSD 428, has been an educator for 21 years. She’s taught elementary, middle school, and college-level courses and Kelli has served as an instructional coach for many years.
