Learning Support And Tutoring
At this point in this Playbook, we hope you have recognized a theme in how we support both our students and our faculty. To this end, we have a sophisticated system of wraparound supports to provide a platform for students to achieve their highest potential—we like to call them our Online Student Support Squad. This squad reviews a series of data exported from the LMS each week to pinpoint academic and career-readiness behaviors that may need remediation or reinforcement—all of those award-winning processes are located in a companion called the Student Support Playbook.
As a complement to our proactive and data-driven advising and student success coach frameworks, NLU’s Online Support Squad model also embeds learning support services directly into the online classroom (online embedded learning support, or OELS), with the aim of developing the self-efficacy of students in courses with high rates of DFWI rates (most predominantly General Education courses) and program Gateway courses for all online learners. Faculty collaborate with these learning specialists to develop resources and timely intervention for students, while advisors and coaches proactively respond to real-time data (from the Online Student Services Playbook) to coach students in danger of failing. Here is what this system looks like:

You will be notified at least three weeks prior to the start of your course if you will be collaborating with an online embedded learning support specialist in your course. At the end of each course, we will also send you a survey to discuss your experiences and those of your students and to continue to improve this model over time. So far, our students and faculty love it! Want to find out more about advising, tutoring, or other learning support we have at NLU? Visit us here: https://www.nl.edu/learningsupport/
