Today, we're excited to shine the spotlight on an exceptional National Louis University alum, Matt Littlefield, who has forged an inspiring path from the NFL to a successful career in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

Matt Littlefield graduated from National Louis University in June 2018 with a master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. With a rich background in the NFL and a bachelor's degree from Gettysburg College, Matt embarked on a transformative journey that led to a fulfilling second career.

Matt spent an impressive 14 years in the NFL, working alongside legendary figures like Hall-of-Fame Coach Dick Vermeil. Starting in public relations and marketing, Matt eventually transitioned to football operations, culminating in a pivotal role as a football operations assistant for the 1997-1999 St. Louis Rams, including the Super Bowl Championship season of 1999-2000.

After leaving the NFL in 2009, Matt explored coaching at both the high school and collegiate levels, gaining valuable experience. In 2015, with the support of family, Matt decided to pursue a master's degree at National Louis University, Lisle campus, marking the beginning of a new chapter.

The decision to join NLU was driven by a combination of factors, including the convenience of the Lisle campus, the program's CACREP accreditation, and the quality and diversity of the professors. Matt appreciated the flexibility of the counseling program, allowing a full year before choosing between the school or clinical route.

Reflecting on Matt's time at NLU, it's clear that the experience was enriched by a close-knit cohort, dedicated professors, and valuable experiential learning opportunities. Notable speakers, including Matt's current boss, Donna Welter, provided insights that continue to resonate years later.

National Louis University played a pivotal role in preparing Matt for the challenges of a second career. The strong foundation, experiential learning, and support from professors and cohort members equipped Matt with the skills and confidence needed to thrive in the clinical mental health counseling field.

Currently working as a clinical therapist at Great Changes Counseling Services, Matt plans to continue making a difference in people's lives within the private practice setting. With a CADC from the College of DuPage and LCPC secured in 2021, Matt specializes in working with adolescents and individuals battling addiction.

Beyond the counseling room, Matt has also shared expertise through presentations at local high schools and organizations. While Matt contemplates potential future involvement in college or professional football, the primary focus remains on providing support and guidance to those in need.
