Faces of NLU: Meet Joey Churchill
A senior Business Major explains how he went from being an unmotivated student to finding his “better self” at NLU.
Some students know they want to attend college right out of high school. They’re ready to work toward their educational and career goals from Day One. But at NLU, we know that’s not everyone. For some students, it can take time to figure out what they want and for their determination and passion to be ignited.
Joey Churchill is one such student. He admits he didn’t always want to be in college and that even when he started his degree program at NLU, he was unmotivated:
“The biggest obstacle I had to overcome was when I did not really want to be in college. I was just doing whatever it took to get by [...]”
So what changed for Joey? According to him, it was all about finding his people and getting connected with the right resources, which he was able to do at NLU. “Once I met with the right people who put me on a path toward success,” Joey says, “I started achieving my better self.”
For Joey, that “better self” includes a renewed focus on his future career in business. Joey is majoring in Business with a minor in Psychology, and he’s especially grateful for the leadership skills he’s been able to develop at NLU:
“NLU has provided me with many opportunities to develop my leadership skills, and NLU’s Career Bridge Office has helped me work toward finding more resources to help me find and land my ideal job.”
Now, Joey sees himself getting his master’s degree at NLU and embarking on a successful career in the business world. His new attitude and outlook are evident when we ask Joey to describe NLU in one word.
“Care,” Joey says, “They have a lot of care for their students.”
When asked what advice he would give current and future NLU students, the newly motivated Joey offers some wisdom that has no doubt helped him in the past.
“Excuses don't get it done, execution does!”
